Composite Deck Installation in Hawthorne, NJ
Project Overview
Composite deck installation replacing an old deteriorated wood deck. The existing deck had warped boards, rusted railings, and was unsafe for use. We demolished the old structure and built a new composite deck with aluminum railing.
Analysis
The old deck was approximately 15 years old with pressure-treated lumber that had not been maintained. Deck boards were warped and splintering. The railing posts were rusted at the base. The underlying joists showed rot at the ledger board connection. The homeowner wanted a low-maintenance replacement.
Process
Demolition took one day. We found rot at the ledger connection and replaced a section of the house rim joist. Footings were dug and poured on day two. Framing took two days. Composite decking installation took two days with the hidden fastener system. Railing installation completed on the final day.
Outcome
The new deck is low-maintenance and slip-resistant. The composite boards will not warp, rot, or splinter. The black aluminum railing provides an unobstructed view of the yard. Proper ledger flashing prevents future water intrusion at the house connection.

Old deck demolished and hauled away. Ledger board removed and inspected for house rim joist damage. New footings dug to 36 inches below grade and concrete poured. New joist framing installed with proper joist hangers. Composite boards installed with hidden clip fasteners. Railing posts set in footings and railing sections installed.
